It embodies the essence of authentic storytelling, capturing life's raw, transformative moments that most overlook.

It was a no-budget documentary that sold to Netflix. Every step of the way, I relied on my knowledge and capacity as an artist. With no industry support, I had to rely on my own devices, which I strategically planned for since I started in filmmaking. I had come a long way since film school. This time, I had all the gear and knowledge to make a Netflix film on my own. It was a result of gradual progress rather than a fluke.

This film delves into crafting authentic moments and explores the art of documentary filmmaking. The journey reveals techniques for captivating storytelling while balancing practicalities. It can be challenging yet surprisingly freeing.

There were moments when I couldn't physically be present, so I resorted to re-enacting certain scenes to convey my narrative. But did this compromise the authenticity? I believe not. However, my primary focus lies in creating films that pulsate with genuine authenticity.

Yet, this does not imply that everything depicted is factual, as no film can claim to represent the absolute truth. Instead, I strive to uncover what Hertzog refers to as the "ecstatic truth" - a profound and profounder truth. This pursuit instills my films with impact and emotional resonance, where authenticity transcends being a mere technique and becomes the very essence of the story.

That's something I already knew as we ventured into the north of Sweden, and now more than ever, it echoes strongly. For me, it's important because that creates creative freedom. The more stable of a platform you are able to build without it eating away at your creative endeavours the better.

The book introduced several key concepts. The concepts aimed at redesigning work and lifestyle for efficiency and fulfillment. The book advocates for the D.E.A.L. (Definition, Elimination, Automation, and Liberation) strategy. This involves redefining personal goals and aspirations. It means eliminating unnecessary tasks and time-wasters.

It also consists of automating tasks and income streams. This I think is especially valuable if you want to gain more time to create. Think long and hard about how you can create systems that can either be automated to gain valuable creative time or earn money. Often done through outsourcing and online businesses.

Lastly, it means liberating oneself from traditional work environments and schedules. Ferris emphasizes the importance of creating a flexible lifestyle. This lifestyle allows for personal freedom and the pursuit of passions. Rather than being tied to a conventional 9-to-5 job.

I believe documentary filmmakers should leverage this concept to empower their craft, for that is truly what it is—an art form. Monetizing art can be challenging, but in today's landscape, I believe documentary filmmakers have an abundance of opportunities at their disposal.

• Filmic Pro is a game-changing app for any smartphone filmmaker. It offers advanced manual controls to mimic professional camera settings. And paired with the iPhones prores capability it is a game-changer. 

• The iPhone, unfortunately, possesses a sharpness that does not align with the cinematic aesthetic. To achieve a more cinematic look, it is necessary to consider methods of toning it down. This can be achieved through post-production techniques such as adding blur or motion blur using software like Davinci Resolve. Alternatively, the use of diffusion filters like Black Pro Mist can also be employed. These techniques help to enhance the visual quality and create a more captivating cinematic experience.

• Similar to Filmic Pro, Davinci Resolve also has a baby app called Blackmagic Cam. Also a very good alternative if you use Davinci Resolve.

• Moment Lenses can elevate your visual storytelling. They offer everything from wide-angle vistas to intimate close-ups. These attachable lenses make it possible to be more creative. I love the anamorphic lens for shooting myself or for close-up portraits.

• Although the iPhone does have built-in stabilization, using a gimbal stabilizer is crucial for capturing dynamic shots while in motion. Stabilizers such as the DJI OSMO OM are lightweight and affordable, ensuring your footage remains smooth and professional. This is particularly important as smartphones are susceptible to micro jitters.

• Enhance your smartphone audio capabilities with dedicated apps like Rode Rec, ensuring your sound quality matches your visual excellence. Personally, I find the Tentacle Sync Timecode Track E to be my go-to choice. This compact 32-bit float recorder, akin to raw video, is an absolutely incredible professional filmmaking tool. I recall using 12 of these gems during a television show a few years back. Placing them on motorcycle drivers allowed me to effortlessly capture the wide dynamic range, from thunderous engine roars to hushed conversations in locker rooms.

• One of the most indispensable tools for filmmakers is the ND-filter, a game-changer in conquering diverse lighting conditions. To make the magic happen, it must be paired with another crucial tool, the smartphone cage. Although I prefer the sturdy and admittedly less fashionable Small Rig model, its reliability has rescued me countless times from accidental phone drops.

• As a bonus thing, I think having a screen and camera protector is important as well. Cause you should expect to drop the smartphone at some point.
