HOW TO MAKE A DOCUMENTARY: HOW "THE PEARL OF AFRICA" FOUND ITS WAY ONTO NETFLIX

IN THIS VIDEO, I DESCRIBE HOW I FOUND THE STORY

In 2016, my dream came true. "The Pearl of Africa," a film I directed, premiered on Netflix, captivating audiences with its powerful storytelling. But the road to success was filled with challenges and setbacks. Today, I want to share my inspiring journey with you—a story of relentless determination, unwavering belief, and the triumph of a small-time filmmaker. So more filmmakers can learn how to make a documentary!

I always dreamed of telling stories through my camera lens in film school. Yet, fear held me back from taking the lead and directing my movies. It wasn't until I stumbled upon a topic that deeply intrigued me—the disturbing homophobic tendency in Ugandan society—that I found the courage to chase my dream.

Researching further, I discovered an extraordinary love story of a couple who fled Uganda separately, unaware of each other's whereabouts. Their reunion in Sweden and eventual marriage captured the attention of LGBTQ media worldwide. I realized this story had the potential to resonate with audiences globally.

Fuelled by passion, I applied to a filmmaking development program, and doors began to open. But just when things were falling into place, a film called "Call Me Kuchu" was released, touching on similar themes. I feared my chances of success had been crushed.

In the face of adversity, I made a tough decision—to either risk continuing with my original story or find a fresh angle that would set my film apart. Merely telling a good story was not enough; it must be unforgettable and thought-provoking.

Researching various angles, I discovered a slight trend in transgender topics. Though I had no personal connection to this storyline, I saw the potential for a unique and compelling narrative. The emergence of Caitlyn Jenner and the growing conversations surrounding transgender issues further solidified my belief in pursuing this fresh angle.

Reaching out to numerous NGOs in Uganda, I searched for a subject to help me bring this new story to life. Building a solid relationship with one NGO proved instrumental. However, even with this newfound support, I faced another setback when funding from the Swedish Film Institute was denied.

I faced a make-or-break moment with money running out and my project on the brink of collapse. I had to choose between self-funding the trip or letting my dream die. It was yet another instance where rejection threatened to overshadow my vision.

But true to my resilient nature, I refused to give up. Drawing upon my unwavering determination, I leaped and funded the trip myself. This tenacity is a recurring theme in my filmmaking journey—a testament to my steadfast belief in the power of my ideas.

"The Pearl of Africa" became a film that defied all odds. It told the poignant story of a transgender woman's transition journey and forbidden love affair. With powerful storytelling and an emotionally gripping narrative, the film found its way onto Netflix, captivating audiences around the globe.

My journey serves as an inspiration to struggling filmmakers everywhere. It reminds us that success often arises from adversity and rejection. We can create something remarkable by forging our paths and exploring topics independently.

Today, I continue to inspire others by sharing my experience and expertise. I have authored an ebook that offers valuable insights into pitching and selling documentaries. Drawing from my trials and triumphs, I provide aspiring filmmakers with the tools and knowledge they need to turn their visions into reality.

In conclusion, the story of "The Pearl of Africa" is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and unwavering belief in our ideas. It serves as a reminder that success is only achieved by facing and overcoming numerous challenges. So, to all the struggling filmmakers, take heart—for your dreams can become a reality with perseverance and a burning passion for storytelling. How do you make your documentary?
